Sept 28, Late Night Under the Lights

Late Night Under the Lights was very successful. We had 28 children race in four different age groups at the Lansing Elementary School on Wednesday evening. The weather was terrific, the course was clean and fast. All the children had a great time. Parents requested that we add more races next year. This was the fifth and final race for 2011. I would like to thank Paula Burton Cole, Lamont Ealey, and Roger Harrison for their hard work putting on the race. I would also like to thank the Leavenworth Bicycle Club for providing special medals for every race. H

2011 Joseph Sheehan Road Race Results

The Joseph Sheehan Road Race is sponsored by Santa Fe Trails Bicycle Racing team. It is in memory of my son Joseph, an avid cyclist. Joseph crossed the state of Kansas on his bike at age 11. That September, he was struck and killed by a pickup truck on our Friday ride to Dairy Queen. This race contests 50+ miles of challenging terrain. The race is permitted and registration can be completed at USA Cycling. Provide a volunteer and get your entry free.

Lake Perry Road Race

Great day at Lake Perry, Kansas yesterday for the Santa Fe Trails Team. Unfortunately, I am still waiting on the official results.

The master's 40 + race had Mark Ramsden take 3rd. Mark has worked very hard for the past year, riding his bike outside on days when most of us hide indoors. It showed. On the first lap, I looked up and said "who's that crazy dude off the front?" It was Mark. Great job by Mark Ramsden! Carl Fischer and Brendan Sheehan raced in the master's as well - waiting for results.
The men's category 5's had Jeff Souter take 14th (out of 50 racers) and Sean Smith took 18th (I think). Sean worked very hard to protect Jeff and pull him to the final climb. He told Sean "When we get to the hill, you are on your own; STAND UP!". Jeff did, and passed 6 riders on his way to the top. He crossed the line and went to the ground to recover. GREAT JOB! Gene Lamb, Dave Derochick, Dean Fuerborn, Erik Anderson, and Glen Tugman also raced.
The ladies category 4 was a fantastic race for the team. Shawn Morelli, and Ericka worked very hard to protect Bonnie McElrath. At one point Bonnie told her teammates to go on without her. They said "NO WAY!" She tried an attack with one lap to go. The field had already been decimated, but other women stayed with them. She had to continue to work with her team through the final climb. I believe this was her first road race win. GREAT JOB! Bonnie, Shawn, and Erica! Also racing in the ladies category 4 were: Danielle Lansford, Jennifer Mapes, and Jennifer Smith.

The men's category 4's were Matt Mapes and Rick Showalter. No report on their results.

The men's category 3's was Michael Loftus. No report on his results.

Froze Toes Results

Atrocious weather. All around us. The group left the shop at 8:00 AM. They drove 2.5 hours through rain, hail and lightening. As I was setting up our team tent, a kid helped me. He said "dude you are crazy! We aren't racing" I said why not? He looked at me like I was crazy! Fired up!
The weather cleared around race start time. The sun even peeked out at finish time. Our group rode very well. Here are the results:

Category 3/4

  •  Matt Mapes 22

Masters 40 +

  • Brendan Sheehan 13

Category 5 19-29

  • Blake Lansford 8th
Category 5 30+

  •  Sean Smith 14
  • Erik Anderson 16
  • Jeff Souter 18
  • Dave Derochick 30
  • Gene lamb 35

  • 4 Bonnie McElrath
  • 6 Michelle Krawczyk
  • 9 Danielle Lansford
  • 13 Michelle Tope
  • 16 Ester Moralles
  • 17 Anita Gonzales.

Congrats to all who raced. Fired up for Lake Perry in one week!

Cancerthon Jan 29, 2011

It was a cold morning on Saturday - about 24 degrees. The skies were overcast. This did not deter our riders. Roger Harrison had cleared the
track for three days. It was pretty clean, although a little slick on the southern (shaded) end. The riders assembled at 10:00 AM. We heard the National Anthem. We then conducted a neutral lap while listening to the Indiana Fight Song. Then...the race was on! 60 + riders rode around the track for six hours. In the end, we raised $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. Most riders achieved a PR for miles ridden outside in the month of January. Thanks to Roger Harrison, Paula Burton, Barb Sheehan and the many volunteers who made this event possible.
