Boss Cross/Kansas

Boss Cross Saturday.

30 MPH winds. 32 degrees. Two mile course which was fast - and hard packed. There were two barrier sections. One run up. Two sand pits.
Great job by Michelle Krawczyk who was 2nd in the race and 1st in the Series!
In the Master's 40 + Open - Richard Paz took 13th , Brendan Sheehan finished 20th.
Jeff Souter crashed in the first turn, but stayed in the race to finish 29th.

Kansas Cross on Sunday.
Gene Lamb took 6th in the Master's 40+! Great job!

Heartland Park Cyclo Cross

Heartland Park Cyclo Cross was awesome Saturday night! So much mud, we had to run about a quarter mile carrying our bikes. Cold and dark with spot lights! The course was really fun and we all looked like a Sasquatch after the race.

Congrats to Michelle Krawczyk who finished third in her category despite losing her shoe on the last lap! Congrats to Michael Loftus who won the men's category 4 race!

Great to see Mark Ramsden (7th in Master's 40+) out there racing again! Saw him twice - once at the start and again when he passed me (11th in Master's 40 +)!

Crazy Carl Fischer (17th in Master's 50 +) raced as well - mud jammed him up quite a bit. Also saw Gene Lamb (19th in Men's Category 4s).

Veteran's Cross

Great weekend of racing for Santa Fe Trails. Both races were in Lawrence, Kansas. The course was very impressive. Over a thousand meters of trails cut into a private property. The trails were cleared. Mud was introduced - yes - on purpose! The weather cooperated both days. Warm for November - lows in the 50s. We had a terrific turn out and everyone rode very well. Looking forward to another weekend of racing beginning on Saturday.

Smithville Cross 10-24

Smithville Cross was very tough yesterday. The course included hills, a beach section with wet sand for about 10 yards, twists and turns of 90 or more degrees. One run up was so steep, cyclists (me at least) leaned on their bikes to help them climb. Temperatures were mild 60 - 70 degrees, and though it was overcast, it did not rain.

Our team showed up in force! Seven riders participated in three different categories. All rode aggressively. We had thrown chains, flat tires, crashes, slips and slides; yet everyone finished. Congratulations to everyone who raced. Here are the results:

Boss Cross #2

Here's Michael Loftus' report from Boss Cross #2.

Much better race day conditions, 50’s, little wind. The course was run backwards with the volleyball pit totally rideable if you hit it at speed. The river sand area was not rideable and that created some interesting conditions. Fields were about the same in size as yesterday.

Carl Fischer - Top 10/15. He had a pretty bad crash resulting in the need for stitches and an ER visit. Old guy still finished strong.

Michele Krawczyk.- 2nd in Women Cat 4’s. Great ride and she looked strong throughout.

Mike Loftus.- 9th in Men Cat 4’s. Figured out how to pace myself and did NOT blow up half way through it.

Thank the guys for truing my wheel yesterday to get me back in the action. Ran like a charm. Now if I can only do this dismount/mount thing better.

Boss Cross

Great weekend of racing at Boss Cross for the Santa Fe Trails Team. Boss Cross for this weekend was at Riverside Park, in Kansas City Missouri. Saturday was bright and sunny yet the temperatures were chilly - 50 to 60 degrees with a strong north wind. The course was fairly flat with two sets of wooden barriers, a sand pit, and a drop off/return to the beach.

Pictures by lanterne rouge

On Saturday Michelle Tope surprised the women's category 4s by taking a 3rd place in her first ever cross race! Carl The Madman Fischer took fourth place in the master's 50 +. Brendan Sheehan took 22nd in the masters 40+. Michael Loftus (19th) and Jeff Souter (31) also entered their first cross races in the men's category 4s.

Spring Fling #3

It was a tough day at Clinton Lake State Park yesterday. Overcast, very windy, and the temperature started at 39 degrees. We began with a time trial at 9:15 AM. Unfortunately, Dorothy Hall had a bad crash in turn #1. She was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was kept there last night for observation. Our thoughts and prayers go to her and James. Hope for a speedy recovery.

The time trial was conducted in the same order as the races. Here is the breakdown:
  • Men's Masters - Brendan Sheehan 7th Place
  • Ladies' Fours - Shawn Morelli 2nd Place, Gayle McFarland 4th Place, Michelle K. 7th Place, Jen Smith 8th Place
  • Men's Fives Under 34 - Neil Snyder 2nd Place
  • Men's Fives Over 35 - Rick Showalter 3rd Place, Doug Harding 4th Place, Richard Paz 5th Place, Kerry George 6th Place, Ken Giovenettio 7 th Place, Eric Showalter 8th Place
  • The criterium was our next race. I noted on my computer that we had already ridden 15 miles with warm ups and racing. I wasn't very thrilled about the prospects of racing again in the wind; however, I did have a new teamate for the Masters - Rick Showalter.
  • Masters - Rick Showalter and Brendan Sheehan raced
  • Ladies Four - Shawn Morelli First Place, Gayle McFarland 4th Place, Michelle K. 6th place.
  • Men's Category Five under 34 - Neil Snyder 5th place.
  • Men's Category Five over 35 - Doug Harding, 4th place, Sean Smith 5th place, Richard Paz 6th place, Rick Showalter 7th place, Mark Madden 8th place. Also racing were Kerry George, Eric Walthough, Ken Giovenettio, Chad Sawyer, Dean Feurborn, and Spark Anderson.

This series has been tough and made tougher by the weather. Our team has shown strength and impressed many folks. The announcer for the Fives 34 and under called out Neil Snyder for inflicting pain on the peleton. In fact, he ripped the group apart. The announcer called out our fives 35+ as the "Santa Fe Trails Invitational Five Race".

Michelle, Shawn and Gayle demonstrated great teamwork for the ladies as they went on to win the final sprint of the day.

3/6/10 Spring Fling Criterium Series

It was a great day for Santa Fe Trails on Saturday!

Masters 35 + - Brendan Sheehan took 10th. Also racing was Rob Wilshusen

Ladies Category 4 - Shawn Morelli took 5th place, Gayle McFarland took 6th place, Michelle Krawczyk took 8th! Also racing were Dorothy Hall and Paula Burton. These ladies were awesome! They all stayed with the pack for most of the race. Shawn and Michelle were in the chase group going into turn four. Shawn's front wheel was struck by another racer and all three ladies fell. Both Shawn and Michelle got back on the bike and finished the race! Just like Lance Armstrong on Luz Ardiden!

I am told by Richard Paz and Ron Stratton that the men's 5 team did well also. I am waiting for written confirmation of their results.

Men's Category 5 - 35+

James Hall 5th
Mark Madden 6th
Doug Harding 8th
Sean Smith 9th
Also racing were: Richard Arnold, Ken Govenettio, Richard Paz, Ron Stratton, and Eric Walthall.

Men's Category 5 - 34 and under

Neil Snyder
Josh Walkup

All reports are that the men were greatly improved over last week. Ken said that his wheels made him Turbo Fast! Richard Paz was "right behind Doug Harding in the finish"!

This Saturday is the prologue time trial. Aerobars are legal. TT helmets are legal! Race starts at 9:15 AM. If you are signed up for the series, you are already registered. We will depart the shop at 7:15 AM. All other races are the same time.

Cancer-thon 30 Jan 2010

The following is an account of the Abelle's Field Cancer-thon, on January 30 from 10 AM to 4 PM in Leavenworth. We had 46 participants and raised over $1150.00 for the American Cancer Society. Joyce Kirk of the American Cancer Society was on site to collect the donations.

What a terrific job! The temperature started out at a balmy 22 degrees after six hours it soared to a high of 36 degrees. The sun did shine. Crazy Roger Harrison worked from 4 am to get all the snow off the track. Our race/ride started a little late - about 10:30. The riders were awesome! Great job by all our volunteers - Roger Harrison, Paula Burton, Barb Sheehan, and Shawn Morrelli. Thanks to all the folks who helped with set up and tear down. Thanks to Martin Murphy, Lamont Ealey and Chris Cummins.

We were fortunate to have food donated by Mr. Goodcents and Domino's Pizza of Leavenworth. Door prizes were donated by Maximus Fitness, Body Beautiful Day Spa, Soul Supply Hardware, Social Suppers. T-shirts, trophies, medals, and coffee were donated by Santa Fe Trails Bicycle Shop. Hot chocolate was donated by Baristas. Anderson Rentals provided the porta johns.
