Buffalo
Bill Weekend went very well. 58 cyclists raced the Cross Race on Friday. 130
cyclist rode the century on Saturday. 45 runners ran the 5 KM race Sunday. All
finished safely and without incident.
Thanks to the superb work by all our volunteers! Thanks for your incredibly hard work to make the weekend successful. Most participants and spectators are not aware of the hard work that goes on for months and weeks before and during an event like this. This diligence ensures participant safety, fun and a positive memory of their time in Beautiful Downtown Leavenworth.

The Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department outdid
themselves! Their cooperation and "Can Do" attitude helped to
ensure that the event would be a success. The Leavenworth Community
Center is truly a jewel. The privilege of keeping our
registration/weekend headquarters there for three days made the event
better. At every turn the staff was helpful and courteous. They
truly reflect the attitude of the Director of Leavenworth Parks and
Recreation.
Thanks to all who came out to race and ride. Special shout to Carl Fischer and Jennifer Smith who participated in all three events! Congratulations to Jen Smith and Erica Haas who won their respective categories in Cyclocross! Congratulations to Mark Ramsden who won men's category 4s in Cyclocross and then raced again in men's masters! Congratulations to Jenn Smith and Carl Fischer for winning their age groups at the 5KM run!

Last night was the culmination of five weeks of bicycle racing at the Warren Middle School in Leavenworth. This race series has been terrific. Thanks to the hard work of Roger Harrison, Joe Porter, Paula Cole, and Barb Sheehan. These folks have been there every week putting in the time and effort to make this a successful event.
Monday night was unusual for this summer. Temperatures were in the low 80s. We had no gale force winds and no hail. It was truly a beautiful day in Beautiful Downtown Leavenworth. The kids were very excited. Many of them had saved their numbers from last week's rain-out. At 6:30 PM all the 1-5 year old children were lined up at the starting line without being told. They were anxious to get started. Part of the charm of this race is in the competitors. A girl rode with a tutu. A boy rode on a tricycle whose theme was Mater from the Movie "Cars". All of them were smiling.
Some of the children's races were fiercely competitive. The 9-10 year old children had acquired road bikes and learned the techniques of drafting. In their three laps of racing the bicycles flew by the spectators causing us to lean back. Harry Ross stormed out front on the final sprint, while Eric Harding edged out Abby Olsen right at the line. Great racing!
The adult race started at 7:30 PM. We started with the Miss and Out. We had new racers and more experienced racers. This is a training race. Racers learned quite a bit this summer. How to put on a bicycle race number. How to draft. What gearing to use a in a criterium. What clothing is allowed in a bicycle race. One very important thing we learned last night was not to impede the progress of riders when you have been lapped and are out of contention.
Thanks to our sponsors: Leavenworth Parks and Recreation, the Leavenworth Bicycle Club, Kramer and Associates Accounting in Leavenworth, Harbor Lights Coffee House, Pizza Hut of Lansing, Mr Goodcents of Leavenworth, the Leavenworth Times, and Marfield's Pub of Leavenworth.,

Two riders represented Santa Fe Trails this weekend at the State Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Spencer Wallace raced the men's Masters 30-49 Road Race and took ninth place. The Master's 30-49 was an open race which means that Spencer raced men of all categories: 1,2,3,4 &5. Great job!
Shawn Morelli raced the women's 1/2/3 Road Race. From Roger Harrison: "According to Renae, Shawn kept surging and they would catch her, she lost it on the final climb". Shawn took 4th. Great job!

Late Night Under the
Lights:
Champions All by Chad
Blankenship
There
was warm glow glistening from the street lights. Sweltering heat rose from the
pavement. The scene at Warren Middle School was electric with anticipation. A brave
group of riders ranging from one to twelve would not be deterred. Straddling their
bikes, helmets in hand, sipping water from bottles donated by Santa Fe Trails
Bicycle Shop, the energy coursed through the air. The turn out was outstanding
with fifty-seven children ready to conquer like riders attacking the final
stage of the Tour de France. Then the moment came and they were off.
Each
child pumped their pedals with determination as they rounded through the course.
These kids battled the heat and persevered. Every child was a champion in their
own right and we would like to recognize the top three riders in each category.

Not
to be out done, an eager group of adults readied themselves to tackle the
course with vigor. There were three categories and every rider attacked as if
their lives depended on it. The competitive nature oozed from their pores and
the sweat dripped onto their handle bars. We would like to note that this was
the first race for Sonny Hatton and Michael Donegan. Additionally, David French
is new to the Juniors (Cat 4) category. Congratulations to each of these
riders.

Great
weekend of racing in Topeka for Team Santa Fe Trails!
Friday evening at 6:30 PM we raced an individual Time Trial at Heartland Park Race Track. This was a challenging course which included multiple turns, hills and a quarter mile drag strip. Riders arrived early to preride the course. We brought a strong team and rode well. Erica Haas won the women's open with a time of 15:43. Shawn Morelli was second, just 8 seconds slower despite crashing halfway through the race. Spencer Wallace was 4th in the men's category fours with a time of 14:55, Shawn Smith was 7th with a time 15:39, Brendan Sheehan was 8th with a time of 15:43. Jen Smith was 8th in the women's category 4s with the time of 19:25. Sedona Posch Smith was 5th in the juniors with a time of 26:43.
Saturday our team raced the Sunflower State Games Criterium at Forbes Field in Topeka. The course is flat with no shade and four corners. The women raced first. Shawn Morelli worked hard with Erica Haas - they averaged over 22 mph. Erica took 3rd and Shawn took 4th in the women's open. Jen Smith was fifth in the women's category fours. Shawn Smith was 15th in the men's category four race. Spencer Wallace was 24th in the men's category 4 criterium. James Lee was 18th in the men's category five race. Sedona Posch Smith took fifth in the juniors criterium. Roger Harrison raced his first race in years - the 60 plus. Congratulations Roger!
Sunday the women's open road race saw Erica Haas take first, Shawn Morelli take second and Anne Parthmore take third. Santa Fe Trails Sweep! Women's open and men's category 4 raced for 47 miles of hilly and challenging roads. The men's fives and juniors raced 24 miles. Spencer Wallace finished 6th in the men's category four road race. Sean Smith finished 19th in the same race. Jen Smith was 6th in the women's category four race. Sedona Posch Smith was 2nd!
Thanks to Roger Harrison for taking pictures at all three races.
